The Importance of Gender-Conscious Discourse in the Climate Crisis
Climate Change - Fall 2020 - The New School
Abstract: This paper further advocates for the importance of gender to be considered in climate change discourse. It aims to reveal the interrelated nature of “distributive climate injustice” and systemic “procedural climate injustice” (Perkins, 349) while showing how gender inequalities reflect global economic power imbalances (Denton, 10). By uncovering the predatory roots of today’s power structures, the paper is able to investigate the repercussions caused by the aforementioned power asymmetries. Through the examination of ecofeminist ideologies, the paper analyzes the gendered roles and implications associated with climate change, then offers solutions in the direction of equitable and effective gender-conscious climate discourse.
